The Sensory Home® Framework™

A structured approach to designing environments that support regulation, clarity and everyday wellbeing.

The Framework explained

A design approach that considers how our homes influence wellbeing through the senses.

At The Sensory Home®, design begins with how a space feels. By considering elements such as light, colour, sound, materials and scent, environments can be shaped to support calm, clarity and emotional balance in everyday life.

Designing in this way allows homes to move beyond aesthetics and become spaces that actively support how people live and function.

The Framework

Every environment communicates with the brain through sensory cues.
The Sensory Home® Framework™ considers six key sensory layers.
Applying the sensory layers

Sensory design uses sensory layers to shape how an environment is experienced through the senses. Rather than focusing solely on visual perception, it considers the subtle signals our homes send to the brain — through light, sound, colour, materials and scent.

When these signals are balanced and intentional, our bodies can feel calmer, clearer and more supported. This approach sits at the heart of The Sensory Home®, informing everything from design thinking and creative direction to brand collaborations and product development.

How We Want Our Homes To Feel

Designing for Emotional States – Homes are expected to support many different aspects of daily life — focus, rest, connection and regulation.

The Sensory Home® Framework™ explores how environments can support these shifts through carefully considered sensory cues.

The Framework In Practise

The Sensory Home® Framework™ informs a range of work across interiors, brand partnerships and product collaborations.

From colour collections and product development to advisory work with schools, charities and brands, the goal is always the same: to create environments that feel calm, considered and supportive.

Designing with the senses allows homes to work better for the people who use them. Together, these projects demonstrate how sensory design can be applied across different environments, from homes and products to education and public spaces.

SPACE Hertfordshire Charity
Through regular talks with SPACE charity, sensory design is shared in a practical way, helping parents of neurodivergent children understand how their homes influence how they feel and function. The focus is on making these ideas accessible and relevant to everyday life.
